March 11, 2026 (IMP): Voices of angst and outrage have flooded social media against unidentified Kuki groups that reportedly held captive at least 18 Tangkhul (Naga) civilians, including a pastor and women, who were intercepted at Shangkhai while travelling along the Ukhrul–Imphal road on Wednesday.
Considering the gravity of the situation, Manipur Chief Minister Y. Khemchand immediately directed senior police and administrative officials to coordinate immediate efforts to keep vigil on the situation and to secure the release of all the civilians. He warned that stringent action will be taken against those found responsible for any unlawful act and urged all to shun violence.
The Chief Minister appealed to those responsible to uphold the highest traditions of humanity and ensure the safe and unconditional release of all the civilians at the earliest.
Earlier, the apex body of the Tangkhul community of Manipur, the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), submitted a written concern through the DC Ukhrul seeking the government’s immediate intervention and the safe release of civilians held captive at the Shangkhai area along the Imphal–Ukhrul road.
“This incident is not only a grave violation of the basic human rights and freedom of movement of citizens but also reflects a serious breakdown of law and order along a vital public road connecting Ukhrul and Imphal. The continued captivity of innocent travelers has created fear, anger, and deep resentment among the public, while their families remain in distress and uncertainty regarding their safety,” the written concern submitted by TNL to the DC stated.
The organisation also urged the Government of Manipur not to remain a silent spectator in the distressing issue.
