Kuki Shutdown Cripples NH-37, Trucks Stranded for Days

March 11, 2025 : The ongoing total shutdown called by Kuki civil society organizations (CSOs) has left dozens of trucks and oil tankers stranded on National Highway-37 (Imphal-Jiribam road) at Keithelmanbi for the third consecutive day.

The protest erupted in response to the state government’s recent order allowing unrestricted movement on all roads and highways, following a directive from the Centre on March 1. Kuki groups have strongly opposed this move, seeing it as an attempt to impose peace in their areas by force.

Tensions have escalated, with violence breaking out in Kangpokpi and spreading to other Kuki-majority districts. Protesters have declared that they will block trucks and Meitei travelers until their demand for a “Separate Administration” for the Kuki-Zo community is met.

The shutdown has disrupted the transport of essential supplies, raising concerns over prolonged instability in the region.
