8 March 2025: In what could be seen as a systematic effort to turn governance and the Union Home Minister’s directives into an embarrassment, the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has declared “an indefinite shutdown across all Kuki-Zo areas from midnight” (8th March at 12:00 AM).
It said, “KZC cannot guarantee free movement of Meiteis across buffer zones and cannot take responsibility for any untoward incidents.”
It stated that despite ample warnings, the state government has sent Meitei people into Kuki-inhabited areas, leading to violence and tension in the region. The KZC cannot guarantee free movement of Meiteis across buffer zones and cannot take responsibility for any untoward incidents.
This alarming situation has led to the death of Mr. Lalgun Singsit of Keithelmanbi and significant injuries among women participating in these demonstrations, according to a press statement issued by the KZC, Lamka.
The Kuki-Zo Council firmly emphasizes that while the idea of peace is indeed welcomed by all, it cannot be achieved through the imposition of force at the expense of a particular community. Real peace is built on mutual respect and understanding. Forcing peace upon unwilling parties can lead to resentment and further conflict, undermining the very goal of harmony. A sustainable peace must be fostered through careful consideration of the interests and aspirations of the affected community.
