March 10, 2025 : Protests erupted along the Imphal-Jiribam Road today as members of the Kuki-Zo groups, in support of a total shutdown called by the Kuki-Zo Council, blocked National Highway 37.
The shutdown, which began yesterday, was in opposition to the free movement initiative introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, part of the government’s efforts to restore peace in Manipur. The Kuki-Zo Council has voiced strong disapproval of the initiative, claiming it threatens their community’s interests.
However, the protesters were forced to retreat from the roadblock after pressure from Naga communities residing along the highway.
These communities called for a more compassionate and peaceful approach, emphasizing the importance of fostering unity and long-term peace in the region.
Meanwhile, Jiribam’s Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar issued a public appeal urging residents to uphold peace, unity, and communal harmony during these turbulent times.
Acknowledging the district’s longstanding reputation for cultural diversity and mutual respect, Kumar stressed the importance of preserving these values to ensure a prosperous and peaceful society.
The District Administration, in collaboration with security forces, has pledged to protect the safety and well-being of all residents while working to restore normalcy.
In his appeal, the DC called on the people of Jiribam to support the efforts of the administration, law enforcement, and security forces in promoting lasting peace and stability.
He urged the community to stand united for a brighter, safer future, reinforcing the need for solidarity in these challenging times.
