Chandel, 15/12/2025: A one-day training program on quality seed production techniques for Rabi field crops was successfully conducted today at the ICAR – Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Chandel. Organized under the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Seed (Crops), the program aimed to provide local farmers with scientific knowledge and practical skills to enhance crop yield and promote self-sufficiency in quality seed production within the district.
The training was presided over by Ts. Leenda Monsang, Subject Matter Specialist (SMS) in Plant Breeding. Dr. A. Ameeta Devi, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK Chandel, emphasized the critical role of quality seeds in the agricultural value chain. She highlighted that seed is the most vital input for crop production, with the performance of fertilizers, irrigation, and other inputs directly linked to seed quality. Dr. Ameeta Devi also stressed the importance of safe seed storage to ensure year-round availability and encouraged farmers to adopt scientific practices to strengthen local seed systems, increase income, and enhance food security.
In her technical session, Ts. Leenda Monsang elaborated on the practical aspects of quality seed production, providing detailed guidance on the package of practices for Rabi crops, with a focus on lentil, rapeseed-mustard, and field pea. She also highlighted the significance of farmer participation in AICRP seed production programs.
The training concluded with an interactive farmer-scientist session, enabling participants to clarify doubts directly with KVK experts. As part of the program, quality seeds were distributed to the 27 participating farmers to facilitate the practical application of the techniques learned.
The event was also attended by Dr. K. Sonamani Singh (SMS, Agricultural Engineering), Ps. Lavid Anal (SMS, Horticulture), and other staff members of KVK Chandel.
