Feb 20, 2025: The Ministry of Civil Aviation has cleared all the air of an unfounded claim, built on the foundation of a tantalizing dream of a new Greenfield Airport coming up in Churachandpur district of Manipur. The claim has been outrightly rejected by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, stating that such a proposal has not been received from the state authority and developers.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has confirmed that no proposal has been received for the Lamka Greenfield Airport at Simbuk (Singngat Sub-Division), Churachandpur district, as of now. This response follows a D.O. letter dated November 7, 2024, seeking the airport’s establishment.
Any such proposal should come from airport developers and the state government with a pre-feasibility study. The Minister of Civil Aviation, Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu, representing the Ministry, in an official written communication to MLA LM Khaute, clarified that under the Greenfield Airports (GFA) Policy, 2008, developers—including state governments—must identify a site, conduct a pre-feasibility study, and submit the proposal for site clearance and “In-Principle” approval to the Central Government.
The Ministry emphasized that it has not received any such formal proposals but assured that any future submissions will be reviewed per the GFA Policy. This clarification comes amid rising local interest in expanding air connectivity in the Churachandpur region.
