Lawyer Dashes Off Legal Notices to Remove Darwin’s Theory from Student Textbook in Bangladesh

A Supreme Court lawyer in Bangladesh sent legal notice to the concerned authorities, including the Ministry of Education, demanding removal of Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection from the science textbook for Class 9-10.

According to Islamic belief, humanity began with Adam and Eve, but the evolutionary theory of Darwin claims humans originated from apes, which contradicts the beliefs, according to SC lawyer Sarwar Hossain, as per the reports published in Dhaka. The lawyer said the notice was sent in public interest as Bangladesh is a Muslim-majority country, the reports said.

Teaching evolution creates unnecessary pressure on young minds. It may be taught at higher levels for research purposes, but not in secondary education, according to the lawyer, as per the reports. The theory was included in the curriculum during the previous Awami League government, which has drawn criticism and debate, including discussions in parliament.

SC lawyer Sarwar Hossain said that if steps are not taken in response to the notice, he will file a writ petition with the High Court, the reports also added.
