Liangmai Naga Council Appeals for Justice Amid Maremei Village Dispute

The Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur (LNC-M), has issued an appeal to clarify its stance on the ongoing dispute over Maremei village and to counter claims made by individuals allegedly backed by NSCN (IM) cadres under the Maram-Thangal Region. The Council reaffirmed that Maremei is an ancient Liangmai settlement, historically recognized as a Liangmai village in colonial records, and later re-established as a hill revenue village in 1991.

According to the LNC-M, despite agreements respecting traditional land boundaries, the GPRN, influenced by R.K. Remping and certain land speculators, has allegedly attempted to alter these boundaries without consulting the Liangmai people. The Council condemned this act as intrusive and unjust.

The LNC-M also accused NSCN (IM) cadres of committing severe crimes, including the reported torture and harassment of six Liangmai women in Maremei village. The Council described the March 31, 2025, eviction of over 30 villagers as a grave injustice, stating that homes were vandalized and displaced individuals were further harassed when seeking shelter.

Emphasizing the need for peaceful resolutions based on customary laws, the LNC-M urged non-Liangmai communities to refrain from land transactions with R.K. Remping until an amicable settlement is reached. The Council reiterated its commitment to justice and peaceful coexistence among ethnic groups in Senapati town.
