Looking Back: In 2021, 5 Assam MLAs Wrote to Assam CM to Declare 13 August State Holiday

Manipuris in Assam continue to observe August 13 — the Manipur Patriots’ Day — paying the highest tributes and honour to the fallen heroes who fought against the mighty British Empire, in remembrance of the roots from which they have grown, and holding hope that one day the Assam Government will declare it a state holiday.

The cumulative population of Manipuris in Assam is now estimated to be around 5 lakhs, spread across 325 villages in the state, and is considered one of the oldest and most culturally rich communities of Assam.

In August 2021, five MLAs of Assam wrote to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to declare 13 August as a state holiday in Assam to commemorate the death anniversary of Yuvaraj Tikendrajit, as the day is observed in many parts of the state. The five MLAs who made the appeal to the CM were MLA Lakhipur Kaushik Rai, MLA Patharkandi Krishnendu Paul Shomm, MLA Udharbond Mihir Kanti Shome, MLA Ratabari Bijoy Malakar, and MLA Silchar Dipayan Chakraborty.

On the fateful day of 13 August 1891, martyrs of Manipur — Yubraj Tikendrajit and Thangal General — were hanged in front of the public at Pheidabung, presently known as Bir Tikendrajit Park. It was one of the most shocking incidents in the history of Manipur.
