The state-owned JNIMS has successfully performed 60 kidney transplantations last year, and the state has completed a total of 186 kidney transplants to date.
With support from generous organ donors, Manipur has once again, for the second time, received the Best Northeastern State Award in ‘Organ Donation and Transplantation.’ The award was announced yesterday during a programme organised by the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO) and attended by Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda.
“Unless we donate, we cannot save lives,” stated Dr. Chambo Gonmei, Director of Manipur Health Services, during the state-level observance of the 15th Indian Organ Donation Day 2025, held at Hotel Imolesh in Imphal under the theme “Angdaan – Jeevan Sanjeevani Abhiyaan.”
During the function, the State Health Director, Dr. Chambo Gonmei, also handed over a Certificate of Appreciation to an organ donor, acknowledging the invaluable contributions of donors and their families toward saving lives. The event was organised by the State Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO), Directorate of Health Services, Manipur, and attended by senior health officials, including Dr. Chambo Gonmei.
“We are spreading awareness among people that a donated organ can save the life of someone in need, even from a deceased person,” he said. “Unless we donate, we cannot save lives — that is why today’s theme is to donate organs and save lives,” added Dr. Chambo.
Deputy Director and Deputy State Nodal Officer, Dr. Subita Devi, described the award as a “huge achievement,” highlighting that Manipur currently has four hospitals performing kidney transplants — two government and two private — with JNIMS conducting about 60 kidney transplants last year. The state has so far completed 186 kidney transplants and is also carrying out corneal transplantations, though liver and other organ transplants are yet to begin.
