In an attack on the ruling alliance, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President K. Meghachandra today lashed out at both the BJP and its ally NPP over the demolition of the historic Manipur Rajbari at Redlands, Laitumkhrah, Shillong — a site of immense historical and emotional value for the people of Manipur.
Addressing a press meet at Congress Bhawan in Imphal, Meghachandra termed the act a grave insult to Manipur’s history and identity and accused the BJP-led Double Engine Government of gross negligence and disrespect toward the state’s royal and cultural legacy.
He also held the NPP accountable, stating that as the ruling party in Meghalaya and an NDA ally, it could not remain silent when such a significant monument linked to Manipur’s royal past was destroyed.
“The NPP talks of regional pride, yet remained a mute spectator when our heritage was attacked. Their silence is an insult to every Manipuri,” he said.
Reacting to NPP President and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s recent remarks, the MPCC President clarified that the Congress stands for principles, accountability, and people’s interests, not opportunism.
He blamed the ongoing crisis in Manipur on the “divisive, corrupt, and insensitive” governance of the BJP-led Double Engine Government, supported by the NPP both at the Centre and in the State.
Reaffirming the Congress’s commitment to protect Manipur’s historical and cultural identity, Shri Meghachandra appealed to all democratic and civil society organisations to unite in demanding justice and ensuring the restoration and preservation of the demolished heritage site.
