The Manipur Congress has said it welcomes Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to the state, but questioned whether the trip would bring any real solution to the prolonged crisis.
Addressing reporters at his residence in Babupara, Imphal, on Monday, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh urged the Prime Minister to convene an all-party meeting during his stay. He added that such a platform would allow every political voice to be heard at a time when Manipur continues to grapple with deep divisions.
Ibobi also expressed disappointment over Modi’s delay in visiting the state, noting that communal clashes have been ongoing since May 3, 2023, leaving hundreds dead and forcing thousands from their homes. “The Prime Minister should have come much earlier to share the pain of the people,” he said.
The Congress veteran further criticized a recent meeting held by the Governor with only BJP legislators at Raj Bhavan. He questioned the intent of the gathering, arguing that genuine discussions on peace should include MLAs from across the political spectrum. “It raises doubts if Raj Bhavan is being reduced to a BJP office,” Singh remarked.
While maintaining his skepticism, Singh said the Congress remains hopeful that Modi’s visit will not be symbolic alone. “We expect the Prime Minister to announce concrete measures for peace and reconciliation,” he added.
