“Manipur crisis is a proxy war,” says Poirei Leimarol leader on 21st Death Anniversary of Ima Kombi

Feb. 1, 2025: “The crisis is a proxy war by India against Manipur using Kuki militants,” declared Thongam Apabi Leima, Secretary of Poirei Meimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Lup, during a tribute to the late Ima Kombi on the 21st anniversary of her passing.

Speaking to the media, Apabi Leima highlighted the urgent need for both state and central authorities to intervene immediately in the ongoing conflict that has gripped Manipur since May 2023.

The event, held at Lamphel Sanakeithel, saw members of the organisation and supporters gather to honor Ima Kombi’s legacy. She was celebrated for her unwavering commitment to human rights, particularly her tireless work against the abuses under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), including forced disappearances, torture, and sexual violence.

Apabi Leima condemned the ongoing violence in Manipur, which she referred to as a “proxy war” allegedly orchestrated by Indian authorities through the Kuki community.

While acknowledging the Kuki community’s involvement, she emphasised that Poirei Meimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Lup did not consider them as enemies, but rather viewed the larger conflict as an attack on the people of Manipur itself.

Amid the growing humanitarian crisis, Apabi Leima expressed grave concern over the rising number of fatalities and suicides within relief camps, citing a recent incident where a woman attempted to take her own life.

She fiercely criticised the state government for its inaction, accusing it of operating under central government directives.

“The people of Manipur can no longer wait for political theatrics,” she declared, demanding immediate and decisive action to address the crisis.
