Manipur, which was earlier hugely dependent on fish imports for its consumption, has taken a quantum leap in its local production of different fish varieties and indeed became first in the country to produce fingerlings of Sareng (Wallago Attu).
According to State Fishery Minister Heikham Dinko, the local production has been scaled up under the supervision of Manipur’s CM N Biren Singh with the initiation of noble schemes like Loktak Livelihood Mission. The current requirement for the state is about 62000 MT to 65000 MT. However, with increased in local production, the only gap is about 30000 MT now.
“And the biggest achievement of the Fishery Department is that Manipur has become the first in the country to produce fingering for Sareng (Wallago Attu), which were earlier imported from Bangladesh, Myanmar,” the minister stated while visiting the 2nd Emoinu Fish Fair held especially today at Hapta Kangjeibung in Imphal East.
Altogether, 120 stalls, including stalls from IDPs took part in the fair, and around 80-Thousand Kg of fish were brought to the event for public sale. And rarely available locally produced Meitei Sarang (Wallago attu), Nung-nga ( Systomas calvatus) were also be made available for public sale.
