The Department of Textiles, Commerce & Industry has issued a notification imposing restrictions on women working night shifts in factories across the state.
Effective immediately, women are prohibited from working between 10 PM and 5 AM, citing reasons of public interest and safety. Under the new regulations, women workers are not compelled to work beyond 7 PM, and their consent must be obtained in writing if they choose to work later hours.
The notification mandates adequate lighting, CCTV surveillance both inside and outside the factory premises, and provision of transportation from the workplace to their residences. Employers are also required to ensure suitable working conditions that prioritize leisure, health, and hygiene, aiming to prevent any hostile environment against women employees.
Furthermore, strict compliance with the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013 is mandatory, necessitating the formulation of a comprehensive policy and appointment of a Grievance Officer at every factory.
Pregnant women and lactating mothers are barred from working in factories beyond 6 AM to 7 PM, ensuring adherence to the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961.
“This measure highlights commitment to safeguarding women’s rights and ensuring their safety in the workplace,” remarked Anurag Bajpai, Additional Chief Secretary of Textiles, Commerce & Industry, Manipur Government in the notification.
