Jurno Pen-Down Strike Ends Today, Enquiry Report Awaited

As a protest, the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and the Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM) have resolved to boycott all Manipur State Government-related news and information, including those involving State and Central forces, until the report of the Inquiry Committee on the Gwaltabi incident is submitted and necessary actions are taken.

While the joint emergency meeting held today decided to restrict the ongoing pen-down strike to only today, members of both organisations will resume normal duties from tomorrow.

The emergency meeting, which initially convened at 11:00 AM and resumed at 5:30 PM after consultations with the Governor, adopted key resolutions expressing deep concern over the harassment of journalists by security personnel at Gwaltabi.

Among the resolutions passed, the Union and Guild have recommended that the Chief Secretary modify the existing government order issued on May 21, 2025, instituting the Inquiry Committee. They demand the addition of a clause directing the committee to identify lapses and recommend penalties against those whose actions or inactions led to the confusion and subsequent mistreatment of journalists returning from Gwaltabi.

Additionally, the journalist bodies urged the State Government to redeploy the security personnel involved in stopping the journalists’ bus to a different location, pending the outcome of the inquiry.
