Manipur now leads in the overall medal tally with 20 medals

Feb. 01, 2025: The tiny state of Manipur is now leading the overall medal tally in the currently underway 38th edition of the National Games with 20 medals: 9 gold, 7 silver, and 4 bronze.

Athletes from Wushu have clinched a maximum of 13 medals: 5 gold, 6 silver, and 2 bronze. Weightlifting has secured 4 medals: 2 gold and 2 bronze, while triathlon has claimed 3 medals: 2 gold and 1 silver.

On the first day of the opening event on January 26, Manipur first opened its medal account in the individual triathlon event through Sarungbam Athouba, who later added another to his tally, becoming a double gold medalist.

Wushu athletes have contributed significantly to Manipur’s success. The state’s medal winners include Oinam Malemnganbi in Taijiquan, Tongbram Saya Chanu in Women’s Changquan, Konjengbam Luxmi in Women’s Nanquan, and Bonish Yurembam in Men’s Nanquan, all securing gold medals in their respective categories. Silver medals were also won by Yumnam Rikimbala in Women’s Nandao, Marshal Salam in Men’s Changquan, Khaidem Panthoi in Women’s Changquan, Hanjabam Langlentombi in Women’s Nanquan, and the pair of Marshal Salam and K. Panthoi Devi.

In weightlifting, S. Bindyarani Devi and L. Nilam Devi of Manipur stood together on the podium, proudly showcasing the strength of Manipur’s daughters in weightlifting (Women’s 55 kg). Manipur’s S. Bindyarani Devi won gold in the clean and jerk, setting a new record, while L. Nilam Devi clinched bronze.
