Marking the 50th anniversary of the declaration of Emergency in India, the Department of Art & Culture, Government of Manipur, today observed Samvidhan Hatya Diwas at the Palace Auditorium, Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS), Imphal.
The commemorative event served as a reminder of the suspension of civil liberties and democratic institutions following the imposition of Emergency on June 25, 1975. It aimed to promote democratic values, raise awareness about the historical consequences of the Emergency, and honour those who suffered during that time.
Vivek Kumar Dewangan, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary (Finance), Government of Manipur, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. In his address, he highlighted how the Emergency led to the erosion of constitutional safeguards, mass arrests of student leaders, political opponents, journalists, and strict censorship of the press. He emphasized that this dark chapter in India’s democratic journey should be remembered as a warning and a lesson.
He noted that June 25 has been notified as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas by the Ministry of Home Affairs and other government agencies to honour the sacrifices of those who resisted the authoritarian crackdown and upheld democratic principles.
The programme featured a screening of a short film on democracy and patriotism, personal accounts from individuals affected by the 1975 Emergency, and a choreographed dance performance on the same theme by the Government Dance College.
The event drew attendance from artists, civil society members, students, and officials, reflecting a collective commitment to preserve and protect the constitutional spirit of the nation.
