March 27, 2026 : Manipur University celebrated its 15th Convocation on Friday at the University Auditorium, conferring degrees upon 1,061 graduates, including 304 gold medallists and 104 PhD scholars.
The convocation, covering academic years 2013–2020, was graced by the Governor of Manipur and Chief Rector of the University, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, as Chief Guest; Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh as Guest of Honour; and Secretary General of the Association of Indian Universities, Dr. Pankaj Mittal, as Special Guest. Chancellor Prof. T. Tirupati Rao and Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Lokendra Singh were also present, along with members of the Court, Executive Council, and Academic Council.
A total of 1,061 graduates registered for the ceremony, of which 304 meritorious students received gold medals across disciplines in recognition of outstanding academic performance. Cash awards were also presented to top achievers. Additionally, 104 scholars were awarded PhD degrees.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla stated that academic degrees symbolise not only achievement but also responsibility. He urged graduates to uphold integrity, ethical values, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Emphasising the vision of Viksit Bharat, he highlighted the importance of innovation, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance, and encouraged youth to contribute towards peace and progress.
Chief Minister Y. Khemchand described Manipur University as a premier institution and an epicentre of intellectual engagement. Reaffirming government support for skill development, he encouraged graduates to become job creators rather than job seekers.
In her convocation address, Dr. Pankaj Mittal spoke on the internationalisation of higher education and emerging policies, including the establishment of international campuses in India. She emphasised lifelong learning, ethical conduct, and social responsibility as key principles for success, while describing Manipur as a peaceful and culturally rich state.
Chancellor Prof. T. Tirupati Rao reflected on the University’s resilience during challenging times, including the COVID-19 pandemic, noting its successful transition to digital learning. He also highlighted the institution’s role in promoting dialogue, unity, and coexistence during periods of social tension.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, in his welcome address, presented a report on the University’s achievements, including timely examinations, expansion of academic programmes, and contributions of various departments to institutional growth.
The convocation was held in a hybrid format, with the main ceremony at the University Auditorium, while affiliated colleges, namely Bethany College, Moreh College, and Presidency College, participated online.
Established in 1980 and granted Central University status in 2005, Manipur University continues to play a key role in advancing higher education and research in the region.
