Manipuri Cinema Shines on Global Stage as Ishanou Screens at Academy Museum

Feb 22, 2025 : In a historic moment for Manipuri cinema, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles announced the screening of Ishanou on March 11, 2025, as part of the film series “Emotion in Colour: A Kaleidoscope of Indian Cinema,” running from March 7 to April 19.

Curated by renowned filmmaker Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, the series highlights 12 iconic Indian films, exploring the evolution of color in cinema and its narrative impact.

Ishanou, directed by Aribam Syam Sharma, will represent Manipuri cinema alongside celebrated Indian films.

First showcased at Cannes in 1991, Ishanou was later restored by the Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS) with the help of Dungarpur’s Film Heritage Foundation.

Its restored version was selected for Cannes Classics in 2023, cementing its global importance.

This screening at the Academy Museum is a testament to the growing recognition of Manipuri cinema’s artistic legacy.

MSFDS also continues its mission to preserve Manipuri cinema, with plans for the restoration of Imagi Ningthem, a seminal film in the region’s cinematic history.
