Jan 18 2025: Though Manipur has been often described as ‘powerhouse of sports’, the future of many athletes is still uncertain due to various challenges and unfulfilled government promises made to them.
On Saturday a large number of athletes, over 50 in numbers, took to street and gathered outside the Manipur’s CM residence to register protest against government unkept promised for job, who clinched gold in 36th and 37th National Games, that was earlier announced by Manipur CM N Biren Singh on 25th Jan, 2024.
Demanding the state government to fulfill the promise made for jobs to 36 medalists, who brought home medal in the 36th and 37th National Games, the athletes threaten to boycott upcoming National Games scheduled to be begin from January 28 at Uttarakhand.
After promised being made for jobs, the govt took to silence and no communication has been made for past 3 years after the national sport event. Among the protesters, prominent archery player L. Rosina expressed deep frustration over the delay.
“How long are we supposed to wait? The government has failed to give us a clear timeline. If this continues, we will have no option but to boycott the upcoming 38th National Games,” Rosina told reporters. As of now, the Chief Minister’s office yet to make an official statement.
