Manipur’s Crackdown on Single-Use Plastics Nets 6,600 Kg, Fines Cross Over Rs. 2.3 Lakh

The battle against single-use plastics in Manipur is picking up momentum as the government has successfully seized 6,637.82 kg of banned plastic items and imposed environmental compensation amounting to Rs. 2,30,400 since April 15, 2025.

The enforcement drive, jointly carried out by the Manipur Pollution Control Board, the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change, and various Urban Local Bodies, has covered major markets across the state. Significant seizures were made at Thangal Bazar, Wangkhei, Bishnupur, Kakching, and other commercial hubs.

Key highlights include the seizure of 1,011 kg from M/S Sushant Varieties and 940 kg from M/S RD Enterprises in Thangal Bazar, among other large consignments.

Seized plastics are destroyed and transferred to registered recycling agencies under the Extended Producer’s Responsibility framework. Recently, 4.5 MT of plastic carry bags were sent to Meghalaya for recycling.

While the campaign has made strong headway, challenges remain in public unwillingness to adopt alternatives and the continued rise of black-market distribution.

To address this, the government has distributed 14,000 eco-friendly bags and intensified awareness campaigns in schools, colleges, and localities.

The Government of Manipur reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding the environment and calls on citizens to adopt sustainable alternatives in daily life.
