Manipur’s First Transgender Doctor Raises Voice Against Bias at NHRC Conference in Delhi

Dr. Beoncy Laishram, Manipur’s first transgender doctor, turned the spotlight on the harsh realities of workplace discrimination and institutional bias faced by the transgender community at the National Human Rights Commission’s (NHRC) National Conference on Rights of Transgender Persons, held today at the Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Centre.

Speaking in the session “Unlocking Employment, Defying Challenges: Stories of Triumphs,” Dr. Beoncy shared her deeply personal journey of resilience—from disguising her identity in school, to embracing life as a Nupi Maanbi (transgender woman), to fighting for her rightful recognition in education and employment.

She recounted how her dream career in medicine was marred by ridicule, transphobia, and rejection, despite years of experience in reputed hospitals.

“Every profession requires merit and empathy, not judgment based on gender identity,” she told the gathering, drawing loud applause.

Her moving account included her legal battle to change her name and gender in official documents—an effort, she stressed, not just for herself but to empower countless transgender persons in Manipur and across India.

The NHRC conference, themed “Revamping Spaces, Reclaiming Voices,” brought together policymakers, community leaders, and rights activists to chart a more inclusive roadmap for transgender rights in India.
