In a landmark development aimed at enhancing road safety and environmental compliance, Manipur has finalized plans to establish its first Inspection & Certification Centre (I&C) at Teramakhong, under the SDO Sawombung, Imphal East district.
The initiative, facilitated through a tripartite agreement involving the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) and the Transport Department of Manipur, marks a significant stride toward improving vehicle roadworthiness and promoting eco-friendly practices.
With a budgetary allocation of Rs. 14.25 crore from MoRTH, the state-of-the-art facility will feature Automated Testing Stations (ATSs), ensuring rigorous testing of commercial and Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs).
Currently, fitness certificates are issued manually, pending the ATS’s operational readiness. The new centre will automate critical tests including brake efficiency, emission levels, headlight alignment, suspension, and chassis conditions, promising fairer and more transparent assessments.
Director of Transport, Khumanthem Diana Devi, in a release, emphasized the centre’s role in reducing road accidents and enhancing air quality.
Scheduled to serve both public and private vehicles, the I&C Centre represents a pivotal advancement in Manipur’s transport infrastructure and regulatory framework.
