Manipur’s Former CM O Ibobi Singh Slams Centre Over President’s Rule Imposition

Feb. 14, 2025: Former CM and Opposition CLP leader Okram Ibobi Singh has vehemently criticized the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, calling it a “flawed decision by the BJP-led central government.” Addressing a press conference on Friday at Congress Bhavan, Ibobi expressed grave concerns, warning that the move would only aggravate the hardships faced by the people.

“Despite the BJP holding power at both the Centre and the state, they have resorted to imposing President’s Rule instead of pursuing a democratic solution. This is a misguided policy that will deepen the suffering of the people,” Ibobi asserted. The mandate of the people has been disrespected by the Centre, he added.

He drew attention to the ongoing violence and unrest that has gripped Manipur since May 3, 2023. Ibobi argued that central rule would not restore stability but rather deteriorate the already fragile situation in the state. The former chief minister emphasized that the people of Manipur and the Congress party stand firmly against the decision.

“We demand a resolution through an elected government, not through the undemocratic imposition of President’s Rule,” he stated resolutely. Ibobi urged the central government to reconsider its stance and seek a peaceful, democratic solution that aligns with the aspirations of Manipur’s residents.

The Congress leader also reiterated his firm stand on the territorial boundary of Manipur and added that no one would be allowed to alter an inch of the state’s territorial integrity. The imposition of President’s Rule has sparked widespread opposition from various political and civil society groups, amplifying concerns over the state’s political future.
