Manipur observed Patriots’ Day on Wednesday, commemorating the valour and sacrifice of the leaders who resisted British colonial rule during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla led the state in paying tribute to the fallen heroes, including Prince Bir Tikendrajit and General Thangal, who were publicly executed by the British on this day in 1891. Several others were exiled to Kalapani for their role in resisting the empire.
Governor Bhalla, accompanied by former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, his former cabinet colleagues, Chief Secretary P.K. Goel, Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, and DGP Rajiv Singh, offered floral tributes at the Samadhi of Bir Tikendrajit at Hicham Yaichampat, Moirangkhom. The delegation later visited General Thangal’s memorial at Palace Compound to pay their respects.
Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said, “Patriots’ Day reminds us of the courage and sacrifice of our forefathers. Their bravery continues to inspire us to uphold the dignity and pride of Manipur.”
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) also observed the day at Congress Bhavan. MPCC President Keisham Meghachandra, along with senior party leaders, paid homage to the patriots who laid down their lives for the state’s freedom.
Patriots’ Day serves as an annual reminder of the courage and sacrifice of Manipur’s leaders in their struggle against colonial oppression.
