MARCH 30, 2026 (ASSAM): Manipur’s theatre playwright Khundongbam Brojendro’s translated plays have taken centre stage in Assam’s 15-day Theatre Workshop-cum-Production in Hojai, organised by the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Assam (Hojai District Committee) in collaboration with the Khundongbam Brojendro Cultural Trust, Imphal.
The festival is all set to light up the theatre with the release of translated plays—‘Keishumshangda Radha’ (Clandestine Flames and Radha in Prison), ‘Aronba Meiri’ (The Internal Flames), and ‘Refugee’—alongside the stage performance of the drama “Refugee” on March 31 at Parishad Shanglen in Assam’s Hojai.
In 2017, Khundongbam Brojendro’s plays, namely ‘Aronba Meiree’ and ‘Keishumshangda Radha’, were translated into English, and another two plays, ‘Refugee’ and ‘Eikhoisu Jibani Thamoi Pali’, are set to be published in book form in English and Assamese.
Khundongbam Brojendro (born on January 18, 1946) penned over 64 stage plays, 14 radio plays, 9 Shumang Leela scripts, and 4 comedy audio scripts before he expired on January 13, 2007. The triennial theatre festival (held every three years) has been organised in Manipur since 2008 and is conducted by the Khundongbam Brojendro Cultural Trust in memory of the late playwright.
During the theatre workshop-cum-production, “Refugee” (by Khundongbam Brojendro) will be performed by the Thougal Artists Association, Hojai, and will form a major highlight of the closing event, portraying themes of displacement and human endurance. The final day programme will highlight the Assamese translations of the plays by the late Usham Kunjabihari Singha, bringing the works of the late Khundongbam Brojendro to a broader audience.
The event will also feature tributes, speeches by scholars, and certificate distribution to participants, marking the culmination of the 15-day theatre initiative.
