Many Parts of Imphal Submerge Under Water; Khurai Area Now in Vulnerable Condition

May 31, 2025: The incessant torrential rain from the past two days has thrown the functioning of normal life out of gear. Many parts of the valley area in the Imphal East district have been either inundated or witnessed flash floods after water from the Imphal River breached in various areas. Some affected areas that can be seen are the Khurai area and the Khurai Heikrumakhong area, some parts of the Heingang and Konungmam areas, and New Checkon in the Imphal East District.

The Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla also visited three key vulnerable areas for spot assessment and evaluation with the Commissioner of Water Resources at Nongpok Thong, Lairikyenbam Leikai, and Sinjamei.

Meanwhile, MLA L. Sushindro of Khurai Assembly AC also rushed to the spot in his Khurai areas to provide hands-on support in the river embankment effort with locals. According to him, five Gram Panchayat areas are in the Khurai area: Nandeibam Leikai, Konsam Leikai, Liashram Leikai, and Chingakhum Leikai. If we cannot barricade the water by now, then there will be a flash flood situation. As most of the MLAs are in suspended animation, they can’t exercise the duty fully.

The water level had risen drastically by around 5 a.m., and I had been trying to block through. Our priority now is to block the water before it breaches the river, and later we will think of a relief camp for those affected.
