March 29, 2025: The Meitei community in Manipur and beyond is all set to mark ‘Sajibu Nongma Paanba Cheiraoba,’ the traditional New Year celebration, tomorrow, and many people thronged Khwairamband Keithel, in the heart of Imphal city, to buy vegetables, fruits, new clothes, and gifts, especially for their parents and brothers, as part of the age-old custom of the festival.
Cheiraoba, deeply rooted in Manipuri culture, marks the new beginnings of the year with prayers for prosperity. Traditionally, offerings are made to deities, and families climb nearby hilltops to mark the start of a hopeful year.
For the past two years, however, the festival had been observed in a subdued manner due to the prevailing unrest and violence in the state. This year, despite lingering tensions, the scene at Khwairamband Keithel was vibrant, with heavy footfall and bustling trade, reflecting the community’s undying spirit and hope for better days.
Vendors were seen doing brisk business as people filled their shopping bags with essentials, seasonal vegetables, fruits, and traditional wear. The market lanes echoed with chatter, bargaining, and a sense of anticipation as families prepared to celebrate Cheiraoba in full swing after a gap.
