Thousands of members from the Muslim community in Manipur staged a mass rally on Friday at Hatta area in Imphal East to voice strong opposition to the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025, recently passed in both houses of Parliament.
The protesters demanded that the amended Act not be implemented in Manipur, citing concerns over its potential impact on the autonomy and management of Waqf properties. Demonstrators carried placards and raised slogans calling for the protection of religious rights and the safeguarding of community resources.
Notably, similar protests were also reported from other Muslim areas of the valley, including Kshetrigao and Yairipok.
Organisers of the rally stated that democratic protests would continue if the state government failed to respond to their demands or reconsider the implementation of the Act.
The protest remained peaceful, with security personnel maintaining a close watch to ensure law and order. No untoward incidents were reported.
