Maybe, as a strategic part of a preemptive measure ahead of the May 3 observation or commemoration of the tragic ethnic strife that erupted on May 3, 2023, many places now in the valley areas can be seen turning into fortresses since Friday afternoon.
Around 200 vehicles, carrying personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Assam Rifles, Indian Army, Manipur Police, and Manipur Rifles, moved in a tightly coordinated convoy — sending a clear message of vigilance and authority.
A massive flag march rumbled through the streets of Imphal East and Imphal West today as security agencies ramped up their presence amid simmering public sentiment and rising calls for peace.
This security beef-up measure comes days after the Manipur Governor, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, chaired a high-level security meeting at Raj Bhavan to review the law and order situation in the state two days back. Top officials from the Army, paramilitary forces, police, intelligence agencies, and civil administration participated in the meeting, with senior commanders joining via video conference.
The high-profile operation comes amid growing anticipation of public gatherings and peaceful protests spearheaded by civil society organizations. These groups have been vocal in their demands for the restoration of normalcy and the safe return of displaced families affected by the devastating ethnic clashes that rocked Manipur in 2023.
“The flag march is a preventive measure to ensure peace and deter any attempts to disrupt law and order,” said a senior security official, noting that while the situation remains under control, intelligence inputs warranted this strong visual deterrent.
Manipur has remained under President’s Rule since February 13, 2024, with the administration relying heavily on central forces to maintain stability in the troubled state.
As the convoys moved through major roads and localities, residents lined the streets — some watching in silence, others capturing the moment on mobile phones — a reminder that while the wounds of the past year remain fresh, the desire for peace runs deep.
