A massive public rally rocked Ukhrul headquarters today as hundreds took to the streets to protest against the scrapping of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the ongoing construction of border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border. The demonstration was organized by the United Naga Council (UNC), with the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) and various Tangkhul frontal organizations leading the charge.
Chanting slogans like “Give Peace a Chance,” “Naga Rights, Human Rights,” “Borders Don’t Bind Us,” and “Restore Free Movement Regime,” protesters expressed their outrage over the government’s decision. They argued that restricting cross-border movement would not only sever deep-rooted historical and cultural ties but also disrupt the livelihoods of communities living along the border.
The rally witnessed the presence of key political figures, including MLA Khashim Vashum, MLA Leishiyo Keishing, and United Naga Council (UNC) President NG Lorho. Addressing the gathering, leaders from the UNC and TNL condemned the move, asserting that any decision affecting indigenous communities must involve proper consultation. They warned that the fencing project could have long-term socio-political repercussions.
The protest concluded peacefully but with a strong resolve to continue the movement until their demands are met. Organizers vowed to intensify their efforts in the coming days, signaling that resistance to the border fencing and FMR scrapping is far from over.
