The Government of Meghalaya has imposed a 12-hour night curfew (from 8 pm to 6 am) at the Indo-Bangla border, within a radius of 1 (one) kilometre from the Zero Line (International Border) as the crow flies, prohibiting the movement of people at the International Border with Bangladesh.
This Order comes into force with immediate effect and remains in force for a period of 2 (two) months from the date of issue of this Order. These steps have been taken in view of the current situation in Bangladesh, where there is every likelihood of cross-border movement of unwanted elements, members of proscribed militant groups, smugglers, and other illegal activities along the Indo-Bangladesh Border.
According to the report, certain portions of the border areas in East Khasi Hills are still porous and prone to infiltration by illegal migrants and members of organized crime having linkages with anti-national elements, including armed insurgent groups, who may gather in large numbers near the international border during the night hours to continue their nefarious activities. Such illegal/undesirable activities, if not prevented, may lead to uncontrollable cross-border infiltration resulting in a breach of peace and tranquility in the District.
