Meghalaya Legalizes Its Local Brew ‘Bitchi’; Approves Regulations for Production and Sale

‘Bitchi,’ which is a similar drink to ‘Atingba’ of Manipur, is likely to boom and broaden its market horizon beyond Scotland of the East, as the Meghalaya state cabinet has approved a new regulation to legalize its production and sale.

Bitchi is a popular traditional drink (rice beer) brewed by locals across the state in general and the Garo tribe in particular, holding cultural significance. The new rule aims to safeguard cultural practices while ensuring proper legal oversight and quality control, according to reports.

However, distilled alcoholic beverages remain excluded and will continue to be governed under existing laws.

Meanwhile, the ‘Atingba’ of Manipur, which is believed to have probiotic properties and is considered a rich source of nutrients, is dying—drinking among the younger generation is being replaced by imported beer and cane.
