Jan 30, 2025: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma declared today a “memorable and historic day” for Meghalaya, as the state takes its first step towards scientifically regulated coal mining operations. In a press briefing, Sangma revealed that the state government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Coal, has secured the necessary approvals to commence coal mining under a framework that ensures strict environmental monitoring and regulatory compliance.
The initiative aims to strike a balance between economic development and environmental sustainability, ensuring that mining activities are carried out following established guidelines and sustainable practices. The Chief Minister highlighted that these initial approvals pave the way for the start of mining projects that will adhere to stringent environmental protocols.
In addition to the three projects currently approved, Sangma noted that 12 more applications are nearing final approval. The state government, in partnership with the Department of Mines and Geology, is working to accelerate the approval process, paving the way for more sustainable coal mining operations in the state.
