“Meitei Will Be Meitei, We Are One”: Bengaluru Event Celebrates Patriots, Unity and Youth Achievers

“Be any religion or any group, Meitei will be Meitei. Let’s not forget that we are one,” said Subhas Takhellambam, President of the Karnataka Meitei Association (KMA), while addressing the community at the association’s flagship event, “In the Spirit of the Patriots: A Celebration of Unity & Excellence.”

The programme, held in Bengaluru, brought together Meiteis across Karnataka for a day of patriotic remembrance, recognition of achievers, and cultural pride.

The event honoured the sacrifices of patriots while also celebrating meritorious Meitei students and youth achievers in sports.

Distinguished guests who graced the occasion included Social Scientist Dr. Dhanabir Laishram as the Chief Guest, Professor Dr. Upendra Nongthomba from the Indian Institute of Science, ISRO Scientist Dr. Raghu Ningthoujam, and social development professional and women’s rights activist Urmila Chanam as Guests of Honour.

Special guests such as social activist Rohan Philem, legendary actor and singer Hamom Sadananda, and fashion entrepreneur Robert Naorem also attended, alongside many eminent personalities from sports, arts, academia, and social service.

In his speech, Subhas Takhellambam reminded the gathering of the need for solidarity in today’s socio-political climate, cautioning that isolation and fragmentation could one day endanger the Meitei community.

He called upon the diaspora to extend their unity beyond cultural celebrations like Thabal Chongba and concerts, and also stand together in protests and solidarity movements on core issues that affect their future. Speaking with conviction, he said the sacrifices of ancestors must inspire today’s generation to act for tomorrow.

He further explained that KMA is a youth-led, non-profit association of working professionals in Bengaluru. Despite financial limitations, he said the group carries a strong vision rooted in courage, humility, and integrity, which he believed would inspire many more to join their mission of serving the people.

The celebration concluded with a colourful Manipuri Folk Dance Contest and stirring patriotic songs by talented artists, which left the audience energized and deeply moved with a renewed sense of unity.
