MHA Asks UNC for Talks in Delhi on FMR and Border Fencing

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has asked the United Naga Council (UNC) for talks in New Delhi on August 26 to discuss the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and border fencing construction along the Indo-Myanmar border, as a formal letter has been sent to UNC in this regard.

Earlier on August 16, a representative from UNC met Manipur Governor A.K. Bhalla at Raj Bhawan, Imphal, where the Governor urged them to engage with the Centre for constructive dialogue. After the Government annulled the FMR and sped up border fencing works, the UNC asserted that the move has affected Nagas living on both sides of the international border.

A formal letter has also been sent to the UNC by MHA Advisor (NE) A.K. Mishra for the meeting. The talks are expected to be attended by representatives from the Defence and External Affairs ministries, according to a report.

The Central Government has decided to scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar to ensure internal security and maintain the demographic structure of India’s Northeastern states bordering Myanmar.
