MHA directs state to monitor influx of foreign nationals through biometric registration

As per the new directives of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), online biometric registration is now mandatory for all individuals, illegal immigrants and foreign nationals to complete online registration through the Foreigners Identification Portal, allowing accurate verification of nationality and identity.

Previously, biometric data was collected physically. The renewed directive follows several cases of illegal immigrants being identified through physical verification in Chandel and other border districts of Manipur. Citing concerns over a potential influx of illegal migrants, especially due to turmoil in neighbouring countries, the government has issued these new advisories to prevent such entries.

According to reports, the District Administration Chandel had organised a Hands-on Training Programme on the operation of biometric machines for District Police personnel earlier. During the training programme, Deputy Commissioner Chandel, Shri Laishram Nandakumar (IAS), stated that, as seen in various border districts of Manipur, illegal immigrants have also been detected entering Chandel district.

As per the directions of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), biometric registration is mandatory for such individuals before deportation. Earlier, biometric registration was done in physical form. However, under the latest instructions of the MHA, biometric registration must now be carried out online.

After registration, the details of the foreign nationals will be updated and verified in the MHA’s Foreigners Identification Portal. This process will enable proper confirmation of the nationality and identity of the detected foreigners.
