Imphal: Jan 24 : In a bid to improve waste management and keep Imphal city clean, MAHUD Minister Yumnam Khemchand on Friday urged residents to register with garbage pickup trucks in their areas.
He stressed that proper waste disposal is a collective responsibility, crucial for maintaining the city’s cleanliness, especially as preparations ramp up for the 76th Republic Day celebrations. His appeal came during a media interaction following a cleanliness drive across key areas, including the bustling Khwairamband Market along the Nagamapal road stretch.
The drive also witnessed the presence of senior officials, including the Commissioner and Director of MAHUD.
Minister Khemchand stressed that while the department is actively engaged in maintaining cleanliness, managing waste disposal is a shared responsibility, especially with the involvement of street vendors and the need for more people to enroll in the garbage collection services.
Responding to concerns about traffic congestion in the Khwairamband Market area, Khemchand noted that only a few public parking spaces, which are approved by the Traffic Regulation and Parking Committee (TRPC), fall under the municipal corporation.
He pointed out that illegal parking, especially in areas not governed by the municipal jurisdiction, is exacerbating the traffic issues.
The minister highlighted the importance of TRPC, chaired by the Transport Minister, intensifying efforts to regulate parking and alleviate congestion in such critical areas.
In a separate social media post, Khemchand emphasized the importance of cleanliness as a key element in ensuring a systematic and organized environment for the Republic Day celebrations.
He expressed his gratitude to all involved in the cleanliness initiative, acknowledging their dedication and collective effort to make the event preparations a success.
