Mizoram Ready to Conduct Biometric Enrolment for Myanmar Refugees

Mizoram, which has provided refuge to nearly 32,419 Myanmar nationals, is all set to launch a biometric enrolment drive for Myanmar refugees residing in the state. The enrolment will be rolled out through a digital platform, the ‘Foreigner Identification Portal,’ developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to gather biometric and demographic data.

According to reports, capacity building for the district teams’ members has been concluded, and the data collection process is likely to be carried out by next month. The registration exercise will be conducted through a district-level committee, headed by respective deputy commissioners, and the overall exercise will be supervised by the state-level committee headed by the Mizoram Home Minister.

Earlier, it was reported in some sections of state-based media that the Champhai district of Mizoram, located along the border with Myanmar, houses the highest number at 13,586, and the state capital Aizawl hosts 3,669, while Kolasib, which borders Assam, has the fewest at 129. They took refuge in Lawngtlai and Siaha with 6,017 and 5,036, respectively.
