Wangkhei AC MLA Thangjam Arunkumar handed over two Lesser Whistling Ducks to People for Animals (PFA) Manipur on Friday.
According to PFA Manipur’s Managing Trustee, Lourembam Biswajit Meitei, the two birds were found inside the MLA’s residential quarter. Realising the need for proper care and protection, the MLA safely rescued the ducks and handed them over to PFA Manipur.
Biswajit stated that the presence of these birds highlights the purity of the waterbody. The Lesser Whistling Duck is a protected species under Schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act and is known to feed on aquatic plants and grasses. The rare birds are migratory and visit Manipur during winter months from other states.
He further mentioned that hunting, capturing or harming the species is a punishable offence. Misconceptions such as the belief that the bird’s head contains medicinal properties continue to pose a threat to its survival.
The two rescued ducks were later released at Lamphelpat after a health assessment by attaching a ring to each.
PFA Manipur appreciated MLA Arunkumar for responsibly rescuing and handing over the birds for proper care. The organisation also stated that only the government and concerned departments cannot save our environment; we must work together, emphasising that strong political will is essential to prevent the illegal hunting and capture of wildlife species in the state.
