In a bid to extend relief to families affected by the recent floods, Khangabok AC MLA O. Surjakumar, son of Thoubal AC MLA O. Ibobi (former CM), initiated the distribution of essential items to over 280 households at Leishangthem Khong Manung on Friday.
It is said that more than 700 families across Thoubal Assembly Constituency will be distributed similar aid through the initiative of local MLA and former CM O. Ibobi Singh.
Initiating the distribution, MLA Surjakumar highlighted that several localities of Thoubal AC, including Kshetrileikai, Wangmataba Mathak Leikai, Wangmataba Doctor Maning, Awang Leikai, Thoubal Bazar Maya, Ningombam, Sabaltongba, Moijing, Leishangthem, and Thoudam, were severely affected by the floods triggered by the overflowing Thoubal River. Essential supplies were being provided to ease the difficulties faced by the flood-hit families, he added.
MLA Surjakumar stated that apart from the loss of houses and belongings, a number of fish farms and agricultural fields were completely devastated. The recurring damages, he said, pose a serious challenge to the state’s economy, which heavily depends on agriculture.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the Governor of Manipur was requested to appeal to the state’s Agriculture and Fishery Departments to extend maximum assistance to farmers in restoring their livelihoods. MLA Surjakumar also requested the Governor for immediate intervention to support those engaged in farming and fisheries.
MLA Surjakumar further lauded the role of local clubs and volunteers who have been actively assisting in rescue and relief operations. He also assured continued support to the affected families until normalcy is restored.
