Following violent clashes between two tribal groups in Kheroni, Assam’s Karbi Anglong, since Monday, the Government of Assam prohibited the Internet/Mobile Data Service of all Mobile Service Providers in the districts of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong with immediate effect until further orders.
However, voice calls and broadband connectivity based on fixed telephone lines shall remain functional during this period, according to the order.
Reports say protesters threw stones at each other, which led to injuries to three civilians and over 30 security personnel, prompting authorities to tighten security measures, including the deployment of over 100 cops to prevent any further escalation.
The clashes reportedly sprang from alleged encroachment on protected tribal lands. Several agitators, belonging to both political and social organisations, have been on a hunger strike for the past 12 days to demand the eviction of illegal settlers.
