Manipur People’s Party (MPP) president Sorensangbam Brojen Singh has ridiculed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed September 13 visit to Manipur, calling it more of a “side trip” than a serious attempt to address the state’s 28-month-long crisis.
Brojen Singh said, “Manipur has been in unrest for over two years. The people cried for intervention through memorandums, protests, even tragic suicides but Delhi remained silent. Now, on his way to Assam for inaugurations, the Prime Minister plans to drop by Manipur for a few hours. That’s not a peace mission, that’s sightseeing.”
He warned that issues such as grievances of displaced families, calls for general amnesty for village volunteers, and withdrawal of FIRs cannot be treated like items on a travel itinerary. “Normalcy cannot come from pit stops. At best, we may get promises polished for elections, but not real solutions,” he quipped.
On the extension of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki-Zo groups, the MPP chief reacted, “This is nothing but rewarding repeated violations. Highway loots, harassment of the public, broken ground rules—everything is brushed aside, while Manipur is treated as a stepchild.”
Brojen declared that if people give MPP the mandate in 2027, the party will take a tough line. “No compromise with Kuki militants, no side trips on peace.”
