Moreh’s Iconic Fire-Walking Festival Rekindles Spirit of Unity and Faith

The 58th edition of the Fire-Walking Festival at Shree Angala Parmeshwari Shree Muneeshwarar Temple in Moreh began on April 2, 2025, marking a vibrant revival of one of the region’s most sacred and culturally significant traditions. The festival, celebrated with great enthusiasm, is set to conclude today, April 11.

Organisers shared that this year’s celebration witnessed participation from a diverse cross-section of communities, reinforcing the event’s reputation as a symbol of communal harmony in Moreh. While rooted in Tamil tradition since its inception in 1967, the festival has grown to include Meeteis, Nepalis, Biharis, and even devotees from neighbouring Myanmar.

It was informed that the successful organisation of this year’s festival was largely made possible by the support extended by the Assam Rifles, following a request from the Tamil Sangam. The Assam Rifles were reported to have played a key role in ensuring the smooth conduct of the festival, especially amid ongoing internal security concerns. Their assistance included providing a robust security cover and operating a daily food distribution service (langar) that catered to between 450 to 500 devotees.

Local prayers and collective celebrations added to the festive mood, reflecting a community-wide aspiration to restore peace and preserve traditional customs. V. Shekhar, President of Tamil Sangam, conveyed heartfelt gratitude to the Assam Rifles, describing their involvement as crucial and proactive in facilitating the event.

The enduring flames of the fire-walking ritual were said to represent not only the strength of faith but also the rekindling of hope and unity in a region striving for normalcy and togetherness.
