DEC 16, 2025 (IMP): Lok Sabha (Inner Manipur) MP Dr Bimol Akoijam has sought an urgent discussion on the Manipur conflict in Parliament, citing the continued failure of the State and Central governments to restore peace, fix accountability, and facilitate the dignified return of natives to their homes.
The MP moved an ‘Adjournment Motion’ on Tuesday, highlighting the urgency of the situation, as more than 60,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) are facing their third consecutive winter in relief camps due to the continued failure to address the issue.
The motion also highlighted the vacuum created by the absence of a report from an official inquiry, which is being filled by vested interests who love to fish in troubled waters. These groups have produced so-called “reports” in the name of “independent people’s tribunals” and “fact-finding missions” on the Manipur crisis, seeking to sustain mistrust and hatred by publishing provocative images along with twisted and motivated narratives and blatant lies.
More than two and a half years into the crisis, deep communal divisions persist, preventing thousands of citizens from returning home. This situation constitutes a grave violation of the Right to Housing, which the Hon’ble Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed as an integral component of the Right to Life under Article 21 of the Constitution, which is sacrosanct. The urgency to rebuild destroyed homes and lives remains unaddressed, the motion reads.
In addition to addressing the plight of internally displaced persons (IDPs) so they can return to and settle in their original homes safely and with dignity, there is also a need to subject the failures of the executive and the mischief of vested interests to legislative oversight by this August House. This, the motion states, will ensure not only peace and justice in Manipur but also strengthen the country’s constitutional democracy.
