In an appeal to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Inner Manipur MP Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has requested the declaration of a state holiday in memory of the late Ratan Thiyam, the legendary playwright and towering figure of modern Manipuri theatre who passed away last night.
Dr. Bimol, in his letter addressed to the Governor, highlighted the immense cultural legacy left behind by Thiyam, who brought global recognition to Manipuri theatre and enriched India’s artistic landscape.
He noted that for a state like Manipur known for its vibrant cultural heritage, the loss of such a rare icon deserves an official, solemn observance.
Calling Ratan Thiyam a “great son of the state,” Dr. Bimol stressed the importance of acknowledging his lifelong contribution to the arts.
