MPCC Demands Judicial Probe; Suspects Embezzlement of Relief Funds in Moirang AC

The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has raised suspicions over the management and utilization of relief funds in Moirang AC, alleging possible embezzlement and demanding a judicial probe, pointing fingers at Moirang MLA Th. Shanti.

According to findings from an RTI disclosure filed by an individual, many items listed were not proportionate to their actual market cost, said MPCC Spokesperson Hareshwar Goshwami while addressing the media on Wednesday at Congress Bhawan, Imphal. He revealed that expenses included ₹35,195.80 on salt and over ₹2.10 crore on bananas, biscuits, eggs, and Maggi noodles for IDPs over 23 months — figures that appear suspicious and require verification to confirm actual expenditure.

Relief management is supposed to be handled by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the state government, and the concerned DC. However, there are instances where the MLA distributed materials to IDPs, raising doubts about whether they were sourced personally or through official channels. Furthermore, one-time allowances meant to be disbursed by government officials were allegedly handed over by the MLA himself, as seen in social media posts, suggesting prima facie involvement in discrepancies.

Currently, there are 20 relief camps in Moirang AC, reduced to 14, but relief management remains under official jurisdiction. The MLA has distributed materials, but the source of these items remains unclear.
