Imphal, February 19, 2026: Emphasising that empowerment must begin at the grassroots, the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW), in partnership with Akashvani Imphal, organised a one-day awareness programme on “Gender Sensitization” at the Akashvani Imphal auditorium.
Addressing the gathering, W. Phajatombi Devi, Member Secretary of MSCW and Additional Director (IPR), observed that while legal frameworks advocate equal rights, practical gender equality remains distant. She underlined the importance of men recognising women’s roles and translating that recognition into meaningful action. She also urged Akashvani Imphal to continue strengthening public awareness initiatives on gender issues.
Konjengbam Sonikumar Singh, Assistant Director (News), Regional News Unit, said that the foundation of gender equality lies within households. He stressed that respectful treatment of women at home should naturally extend to professional and social spaces. He further noted that the transgender community in Manipur experiences comparatively better social recognition than in many other states.
Nongthombam Roma, Programme Executive and Chairperson of the Women Cell–Internal Committee at Akashvani Imphal, highlighted the frequent lack of recognition for women in leadership roles. She encouraged women to remain informed about their rights and assert them confidently, adding that men must play an active role in supporting gender equity.
Speaking separately, MSCW Chairperson Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang reiterated that empowering individuals at the grassroots level is essential for broader societal transformation. She reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to addressing issues affecting women and called for collective efforts to ensure a more equitable society.
The technical session featured Lourembam Dayabati Devi, former member of MSCW, who discussed distinctions between gender equity and gender equality, including roles at home and workplaces. Advocate B. Supriya Devi delivered a session on engaging men as allies in advancing women’s empowerment.
The event was attended by MSCW member SK Sophia Moyon, Thokchom Jogendrajit, Assistant Director (News), Regional News Unit, Akashvani Imphal, T. Chuongsin Koireng, former member of MSCW, and staff members of Akashvani Imphal
