July 23, 2025: The Naga Students’ Organisation, based in Lahe town (Sagaing Division, Myanmar), has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Naga Army members who have been captured or detained by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) in Myanmar.
At least 16 members of NSCN-K (led by Aung Yung) were reportedly captured by KIA forces along with their weapons at Chanra Gate, in the Naga region of Myanmar. The Naga Students’ Organisation (Lahe town) considered it an act of aggression by the Kachins and a sign of hostility. A recent incident suggests that the relationship between the groups is not well.
Earlier, on June 7, 2024, the NSO departed from Lahe to initiate a peaceful dialogue with the KIA leadership to address the growing crisis but were denied access to the KIA headquarters on baseless grounds, according to some reports.
Meanwhile, the Naga Organisation in Manipur has been pressing the government to scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and border fencing. The FMR allows people living along the India-Myanmar border to travel up to 16 km into each other’s territory without a visa.
